Objective

The Islamic Arts Biennale is a landmark cultural event dedicated to celebrating the heritage and artistic traditions of the Islamic world. To deepen the visitor experience, the organizers required a digital companion platform. The objective was ambitious: to break down complicated historical narratives into the “easiest and quickest way” possible using maps, family trees, detailed articles, and biographies. This digital platform needed to serve as a pocket guide, allowing visitors to scan a QR code at the exhibit and instantly access deep context about the artifacts in front of them.

Challenge

  • Information Overload: The subject matter involves centuries of genealogy and complex geopolitical history. Presenting this on a small mobile screen without overwhelming the user was a significant UX challenge.
  • On-Site Usability: Visitors are standing in a museum environment. The site had to be “glanceable,” loading instantly on mobile data and allowing for quick navigation between audio guides and text.
  • Audio-Visual Integration: The client required a seamless way for users to listen to detailed narrations (“Audio Files”) while viewing the object details, catering to different learning styles.

Solution

  • Visual Learning Tools: To meet the goal of “explaining history quickly,” we integrated responsive Maps and Family Trees that adjust to mobile screens. This allows users to visualize the lineage of dynasties or the spread of civilizations with a simple pinch-and-zoom interaction.
  • Audio-First Design: Recognizing that visitors may prefer listening while looking at the physical art, we embedded prominent Audio Players on every detailed page. A sticky playback bar allows the narration to continue even as the user scrolls through the text.
  • Optimized for Speed: We utilized a lightweight WordPress architecture
  • Dynamic Content Management: The WordPress backend was customized to handle “Object Post Types.” This allowed the curation team to easily upload an image, paste the biography, and attach the specific audio file for hundreds of exhibits without needing coding knowledge.

Results

  • Enhanced Engagement: The “Scan-and-Listen” functionality significantly increased the time visitors spent at key exhibits, as they engaged with the audio stories.
  • Accessible History: The simplified UX successfully demystified complex Islamic history, making the “Al Bidayah” narratives accessible to casual tourists and history buffs alike.

Conclusion

The Islamic Arts Biennale QR Website demonstrates GTECH ability to merge education with technology. By leveraging the flexibility of WordPress, we created a digital bridge that turned a complicated history lesson into an engaging, handheld journey.
