Objective
The Al Miyah Challenge, a program of The Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative (MBZWI), aims to accelerate technological breakthroughs for a water-secure future. With new challenges launching regularly to participants ranging from academia to global startups, the initiative required a robust digital infrastructure to manage high-stakes applications. GTECH was tasked with the critical backend operation: the Design and Development of the Registration Platform. The goal was to build a secure, efficient data intake engine capable of handling complex technical proposals from around the world.

Challenge
Beyond Simple Data Collection
- Complex Data Logic: The application process was rigorous, requiring detailed technical proposals, team vetting, and resume uploads. A standard “Contact Us” form would have resulted in data chaos and user frustration.
- Diverse User Base: The platform had to accommodate a wide range of participants from non-profits to private sector businesses, requiring dynamic form fields that adjusted based on the applicant type.
- Operational Efficiency: The judging panel needed to review thousands of applications offline. The organisers required a system that could instantly convert raw web data into professional, readable formats.

Solution
- We broke the intimidating application requirements into a clear Multi-Step Wizard. By grouping fields into logical sections (e.g., “Team Details,” “Technical Proposal,” “Legal”), we significantly reduced cognitive load and application abandonment rates.
- Real-time validation ensured that users could not submit incomplete entries, saving administrative time on follow-ups.
- We chose Laravel for its superior security features and ability to handle complex relational databases. This ensured that sensitive intellectual property (IP) submitted by startups was stored securely.
- Custom Export Engine: We built a specialised feature allowing administrators to export registrations as structured CSVs for data analysis and formatted PDFs for the judging panel. This feature automatically compiled user inputs and uploaded files into a single, printable dossier.

Results
- Operational Success: The system successfully processed thousands of applications with zero data loss, ensuring a smooth intake process for the challenge.
- Administrative Efficiency: The PDF/CSV export automation reduced the time required to prepare judging materials by over 80%.
- User Experience: The step-by-step design received positive feedback for its clarity, allowing innovators to focus on their solutions rather than fighting the form
Conclusion
The UAE Water Challenge project demonstrates GTECH’s ability to build a complex Registration Platform. By moving beyond standard CMS tools and utilising Laravel, we provided a secure, scalable platform that powers the search for global water solutions.
